Because Photobucket is having problems with their site most of the images for blog designs are not showing up. They have guaranteed that all the images are safe and okay and everything should be back to normal once they fix whatever problem is going on.

I have no control over Photobucket and most blog designers are having the same problems with customer images not showing up.

How do I hide my Test Blog?

Your blogger profile is where people go to learn more about you, see what blogs you follow, and to find all the blogs that you write for.

But if you do a practice or test blog you might not want other people to see it. Hiding it is very easy.

Go to your blogger dashboard

Click on Edit Profile

Click on the link that says Select Blogs to Display

Click only the blogs that you WANT to be displayed

Click Save Settings and you're done.

It might take a couple minutes to update your profile.

Scrapbooking Kits

So the next step to designing your own blog is picking out a scrapbooking kit. You use the "papers" as the backgrounds and the "elements" for the header, divider, signature, and everything else.

When picking out a kit make sure you like the colors and most of what the kit comes with. If there are a couple papers and or elements you don't like that is fine. You just don't use them when designing your blog.

IMPORTANT - Not all designers allow for this type of use. And some allow their kits to be used on blogs but for a fee. Before buying a kit you HAVE TO MAKE SURE that you are allowed to use it. For this purpose I have already gotten permission from Libby Pritchet. Anyone who uses my tutorials will be allowed to purchase and use her kits for their design.

You will need to pick out a scrapbooking kit, purchase it, and download it to your computer. For this purpose I am going to use Come On Baby Light My Fire because my hubby is a volunteer firefighter.

Making a wider blog

So right now when you go to View Blog it should look something like this. Some people might like this and if you are one of them you can skip this tutorial and move onto the next one. But if you want to make everything a bit more wider keep reading -

What we want to do now is make our blog area, header and sidebar a bit wider. To me it makes the blog look so much better plus you can put larger gadgets in your sidebar(s).

So now click on Design -

And then click on Edit HTML -

Now you are going to see all the coding you are going to use for your blog design. This is where we will add your background, signature, post divider, and whatever else. Don't be scared of it. Because you (should) be working with a practice blog if something doesn't work you can just clear your edits.

Just make sure you ALWAYS PREVIEW BEFORE you save! Always!

Now we are going to make our template a little more pleasing to the eye.

Find this code - It's not that far down and if you use a Mac you can do Command F to search for it.

Now you have a wider blog area, sidebar, and header which will make the design look so much better!

Get a practice blog

I highly recommend that you start off designing on a practice blog before doing this on your own blog. That way if there are any mistakes made you can catch and fix them before they end up on your blog. I actually recommend this for each time you change your design and I still use a practice blog before I change anything on my main blog. It has helped to keep me sane as a blog designer!

To get a practice blog go to your blogger's dashboard -

Click on "Create a Blog"

Fill in the name of the blog and get a name that is available. I would just use something with practice in the title because those are usually always available.

Press continue.

Here you will be taken to a template menu. Don't spend too much time here because we are going to convert back to the old templates once we publish the blog. I always just keep it as "Simple" and then press continue.

Now you should see this -

And then click on Start Blogging.

Now to do blog design we need to set it to the Minima template. Super easy : ) I want to warn you that this template has only one sidebar. But for the purpose of learning blog design this is the easiest template to use.

If your main blog has a Minima template with two sidebars you can just copy and paste that whole HTML code into your practice blog'S HTML code. Make sure to COPY instead of CUT! If you have a design by me then you could do this because all of my designs are based off of the minima template. If you're unsure you can email me with a link to your blog and I will try to help.

Now to get the Minima Template -

You should see this page -

What you are going to do now is click on the Design tab -

And then click on the Edit HTML code tab -

Now scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the Select Layout Template link -

Now when you get to the next page select Minima and save template -

You will be kept on the same page so after you save it click on Edit HTML again and you should see this in your code -

Now you have your practice blog in the Minima template and are ready to start designing!

I have a couple bloggers who have not emailed me about their design in about a week (or more). My husband just got called to go overseas earlier than expected and because of this all orders have to be paid for, completed and installed by next Sunday or I am canceling them and they will no longer be available to you. I want to be able to spend a couple weeks with my husband without having to worry about blog designs : ) Thanks!

The End (kinda).....

So in an update to my last post I have decided to stop doing design work for other people till at least June/July when my son goes to school. Ever since I decided this I have felt a huge weight off of my shoulders which lets me know that I have made the right decision.

I don't want ANYONE to think that I made this decision because of them. This was my own personal decision that I have been debating over the last couple weeks.

I just want to be a mom and a wife and focus more on the top priorities in my life. I want to go to bed and watch movies with my husband without the computer on my lap and doing design work while we spend time together. I want to take my son to the park and not be constantly on my phone going back and forth answering questions about designs.

BUT at the same time I still want to work on designs. But in my time. So I am going to do tutorials on here to teach YOU for FREE how to do blog designs! I am thinking of maybe posting tutorials once to twice a week depending on how much time I have to write them up.

And this I am super EXCITED about. It is a balance between doing it for a business and just doing it for fun and when I am able to.

And the best part about it is I am going to teach use using GIMP which is a free software that anyone can download and use.

In addition to doing blog design tutorials for blogger I also want to open and teach people how to get a Wordpress blog and get into Digital Scrapbooking like I did here -- Digital Scrapbooking. The WP might take a while because we are remodeling our house at this time too and I can only take on so much.

But if you have questions about blogger OR Wordpress please just email me and I will try my best to help you when I am able to.

I also want to thank EVERYONE who came to me for getting a design done. I LOVE doing blog design and blogging. I love how it gives moms an outlet to everyday life and how it connects everyone around the world. I am so thankful for the people who trusted me with their blogs and let me do what I love and that is design.

And if you have gotten a design done by me and in the future want changes go ahead and still email me. If I have the time I will of course do what I can to help you out : )

Decisions Decisions

I am not taking any more orders for blog designs until at least February. I say till at least February because at this time I am debating keeping the blog design shop open.

When I started this (about a year ago) I loved doing blog design. I was just starting and wanted to help every blogger in the world get a design that they loved. And every time that I installed a new design I was so happy to know that someone's day was better because of what I was able to turn their blog into.

Now I still love helping people but it is becoming more of a burden than what I think it should be. Especially the last couple weeks with no payments and other issues that have come up. I have been going back and forth in my head but not until today have I leaned more towards closing shop than I have before.

I never wanted to be someone who went to bed with designs on her mind or someone who would take time away from her family do go do work on the computer. The last couple weeks have been just that and while I like the extra money I am not sure that it's worth it.

One part of me is saying close shop, the other part is saying keep it open, and then another part of me is saying close shop but teach others for free how to do designs. I am just sure which one I am going to end up going with.

I am hoping that these two weeks will help me make up my mind because it is not an easy decision.

There were several designs I started before the holidays and have not yet heard back from the blogger about their design.

I pay for the images/kits when starting a design, put the work into them, and then expect that payment will be made.

Because of this people who now come to me to get a design done will be required to put down a $20 NON - REFUNDABLE deposit and fill out the design questionnaire BEFORE being added to my waiting list.

This does not apply to people who are already on my waiting list and have been in communication with me about their design within the last four days.

If you are one of the bloggers that have started a design with me and am no longer in contact I am taking you off the waiting list and will require that you pay the price for the kit, the Commercial Use fee, AND $20 deposit BEFORE you are added back to the waiting list. I have sent out many emails and DM's through Twitter and am still not getting responses.

I really hate doing this because I have never required deposits before but I just feel like it is something I have to do to keep me from doing work I am not being paid for : (

Twitter Do and Don'ts

I have been on Twitter for a little over a year now and love it. It's a great way to connect with other bloggers. But just like with blogging there are do and don'ts for Twitter. I asked my followers what they would put on a do and don't list when it comes to Twitter and I got tons of responses. Here they are --

- Follow people back that follow you (unless it's spam or a company just wanting your business). And follow back especially when you talk to people through Twitter. I hate when I have a conversation with someone and they still don't follow me back. I usually unfollow when that happens.

- Don't do automatic DM's (direct messages) because people don't like it and it will cost you followers.

- Don't ONLY Tweet about your giveaways/business. If you want to connect with people they need to get to know you and want to support you because they like you.

- But DO Tweet about your giveaways! I Tweet about the design site when I have a sale, giveaway, or new design posted. But I usually only do it once or twice a day (morning and afternoon).

- A great way to get to know people is through Twitter parties. Every Friday night/evening they have what's called a #wineparty where people get together, drink some wine (you don't have to), and talk about everything. I have participated in this once or twice and am trying to do it more. Just depends on when my little one goes to bed!

- Do #FF 's on Fridays! (Follow Friday) I usually #FF the people I have been talking to that week. I love this because I have found so many awesome people that I might not have found otherwise.

- Pay attention to your mentions or @'s. When I first started Twitter I had no idea about this and ignored my mentions for about a week. When I realized my mentions and started talking to more people I fell even more in love with Twitter. It's fun to talk and connect with moms all over the country/world!

- If someone who you are following isn't following back @ them to just say hi. Some people won't follow back unless you make an effort to connect with them.

- And please don't Tweet while driving! This I think shouldn't be a given but I have unfollowed two people this week because they have admitted that they tweet while they drive. It's so dangerous and I can not support anyone who does this.

- Don't use Twitter to just complain. A lot of people get tired of following someone who does nothing but complain complain complain. Some complaints are fine but make sure it's not all you that you send out.

- Spam Bots. This is really something that you can't change but it annoys everyone. I tweeted about how Joe got me and iPad for my birthday and the next thing I know I have tons of @ about getting free iPads.

Wordpress Update

Yesterday I tried switching my mommy blog from blogger to Wordpress and ran into a two month block. I learned that when you register a domain you have to wait two months before you can transfer it to another hosting site. And because I just registered thehappyhousewifeblog.com in the beginning of December I can't transfer it until Feb 3rd. Grrrrr! I KNOW!

It is a law everywhere no matter where you register your domain name at. I guess it has something to do with hackers, security or something like that.

Because I have always gone through Blogger I was unaware of this otherwise I would have waited to get my domain name when I went to Wordpress. And I don't want to just get a new name for my mommy blog because I just did that and launched it through Blogger.

Confusing? Yes I know.

So where are we at now with Wordpress? Well I have gotten a domain name and hosting until February that way I can go ahead and start learning Wordpress and how to design for it. It doesn't seem too hard but I have to take the time and go through the process of learning the coding.

If you are on my list of designs for WP then please just be patient with me while I learn it. With this block it might take me a little more time than I thought but I am hoping that by the end of January I will be working on your blogs.

If you are wanting to switch to WP and are having problems please email me at lindsayintx@aol.com and I will try to help. I went through godaddy because you can do month to month hosting which I liked. And they have great customer service. I called this morning just to make sure I was doing everything right and I was and he also told me what to do next. I was then able to follow his steps and it was pretty simple.

So now I am off to work on some WP designs. I am excited to be doing this and hope that in January/February I will be able to offer WP designs to everyone : )!

New Design

Hope you like the new design here at HHD! I was going to wait till January to launch the new design but couldn't wait because it's just too cute : ) And with the new design comes new changes for both my design site and mommy blog.

For the design site

- I will be doing weekly tutorials to help you guys with your blogging. So please email me if there is anything you want to learn and you might just see a tutorial about here soon! I am thinking "Tutorial Tuesdays".

- I will still be doing One Time Designs where you can get a full blog design for only $30!

- I am going to start having my monthly giveaways on a certain date every month. I havent decided the exact day yet but will be doing giveaways again in January. If you're not following on Twitter you might want to start. It's usually where I announce my giveaways and it gives you extra entries.

Make a Twitter background

Making a Twitter background is really easy and can be made with the pictures you have on your computer.

-- FYI You are NOT allowed to take pictures off the internet without permission. You are also not allowed to take the design I make you and use it for this tutorial. I have to pay a CU fee for Twitter designs and it is illegal for you to use images without permission first. Thanks!

1.) First find a picture that you want to use. You might have to re-size it in Photobucket so I am going to show you how to do that too.

2.) Upload your image to photobucket and click on the re-size option

3.) Then when this pulls up change the size to 1000 by 1000 or whatever you want. Different sizes will make you image show up differently but you can't make the image too big or Twitter won't allow it. I think the largest Twitter will allow is 1000

4.) Once you have changed the size save the image as a copy that way you can always go back to the original if or when needed

5.) Then you are going to want to download it so it is back on your computer

6.) Now that that is done log into your Twitter account

7.) Go to your profile

and then

8.) Then click on the Design tab

9.) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see this

10.) You might have to click the tile box if your image is too small. But just upload your image, save, and your background should show up like this

Adding your Tweets to your Sidebar

Have you always wanted to add your Tweets to your sidebar? It's pretty easy and is helpful for getting your readers to find you on Twitter.

1.) Go to your dashboard

2.) Click on "Add a Gadget"

3.) In the search box put "Twitter" like this

4.) There are several options to chose from so you just have to pick the one you like best. Some have different designs or layouts so you might like one better than others. So once you get the one you want just click on it to chose it.

5.) Then it should bring up a screen similar to this. You have to put your Twitter name in so it can find your Tweets. You also will have the option to change the colors, change the title, and pick how many Tweets you want to show up.

6.) Then save and it should show up on your sidebar with a link to follow you.

Putting pictures on your sidebar is a great way to connect with your readers. It helps put a face with the person sitting behind the blog. And it's super easy! Here is how you do it -

1.) Pick a picture from your computer that you want to use. You have to re-size it to be the size of your sidebar (usually 220 px).

2.) Go to your Dashboard

3.) Click "Add a Gadget"

4.) Click on Picture

5.) Upload the picture from your computer that you want to use and...

6.) Save! Now your picture should be one your sidebar like this

To say the least I have been so busy this week! Five new designs and with the hubby gone out of town that is no easy task! But of course I was able to get to all of them and give them all designs that they just loved! I was happy because they all had different themes, colors, and designs that were fun to work with! And now I am working on a Wine Blog so you can look forward to seeing that shortly! Enjoy!

The Mommy Critic came to me wanting a movie theme that went along with what she wanted to blog about. Being the mom of three kids she makes sure that the movies that come out are great for your kids to see.

Parks Photography wanted a green and park theme to go along with the photography she takes of parks around the states. She is blogging about going to different parks with her kids and helping keep the parks safe.

Mrs. Sawyer is a home schooling mom who wanted to help other home schooling moms who are online. When I saw this kit I knew it would be perfect and am happy that I was able to design something that she LOVED!

When Amanda came to me she told me that she loved pinks and wanted something that represented love. So I found a wonderful kit by Penny Springmann that she just loved and came up with this design.

Parts of a Blog

I have gotten a lot of questions while designing about the different parts of a blog. Like most, you may not know the terms for what the parts of your blog are and might be confused when going to get a design done. When I do my designs I ask about sidebars, sidebar tabs, signatures, and your header. If you are scratching your head then this is the tutorial for you.

You can click on the image below to see the details of the blog. I also am going to go step by step through what each part of the blog means.

Header - This is where your title and subtitle go. This is one of the main things done along with your background when getting a design done. You can add pictures, elements from scrapbooking kits, and favorite sayings.

Sidebars - In blogger you can have one or two sidebars. This is where you will "add a gadget" in your blogger dashboard. You can upload pictures, add text, add your profile, put buttons from your favorite blogs, put a link to your Twitter page and even your latest Tweets and just about everything. I love the sidebars because there is almost nothing you can't do with them.

Sidebar Tabs - Because there are so many "gadgets" usually added to sidebars they can become cluttered and hard to determine where and what everything is. So the sidebar tabs make it easier to find what you are looking for. Some even put all their links on one sidebar and all of their pictures and buttons on the other. There is no wrong way to do it.

Blog Button - A blog button is like a badge fro your blog. It should go along with your design, have your blogs title, and anything else that makes your blog interesting. This is what people who love your blog will add to their site so other people can go visit.

Grab Box - This is the code that your readers will copy and paste into their blog to get your button on their site. Then when someone clicks on your button they will be directed to your site from whatever site they are on.

Signature - I didn't add this on the example above due to the spacing of the post and sidebars. But is what is after the post and says "Lindsay {the design mommy}". This can be your name, your pen name, or even have a little twist. I have done many signatures and they never are even close to the same. You can add a flower, a doodle, or an element from your scrapbooking kit. Have fun with your signature!

Thats pretty much the basic for the parts of the blog. I am doing another tutorial about the different types of blogs out there that will also be interesting and help you with figuring out what kind of blog you want to do.

The main thing when blogging is to not become overwhelmed and take it all in a little at a time. You will learn it once you have done it enough and it will all become like second nature to you!

Have you noticed that Blogger now requires a title for some of the sidebar gadgets? You use to be able to just save and go on with what you were doing but now you see this

For those of us that have cute sidebar tabs this could be a problem. Unless you know the way around it. All you have to do is type the heading code in the title section and save. Voila! There ya go. The only thing that sucks about this is you have to do it every time. But it works and its easy once you can memorize it.

So for the last couple days I have gotten emails about good ways to promote your blog. Asking about websites, social blog networks, and just the do's and don'ts with having a great blog.

Some Don'ts -

Play automatic music on your blog. I hate this and will often just leave to avoid it all together. Because most of the time I am already playing my own music and it just gets annoying when I go to a blog and music starts playing.

Misspellings. I once went to a blog that said "I didn't go to collaege." I don't really care whether they went to college or not but the misspelling just annoyed me.

Pay per Post. I hate when I go to a blog and you can tell that every post they do they got paid for. It's just a waste of time for me to go to that blog. If I am looking for a review I will go and find it.

Some Do's

Leave comments on other blogs. This is a great way to get your blog out there and get to know other bloggers. BUT DON'T just put "Great Post." or just "Following from MBC." Because it just seems like you didn't really read the post and or you just stopped by in hopes that the favor will be returned.

Do join social blogging sites because it helps you get to know other bloggers who also have the same interest as you. You can also look for specific things your interested in like getting new followers, giveaways people are doing, and or just other tips for blogging.

I have been so super busy! Between designing, getting the house cleaned up before the hubby comes home, and doing mommy time with my son I feel like I haven't sat down in about a month. But Joe comes back on Friday so we are super excited and are just counting down the days!

Here are the two designs I have done this week. I have about five more to do so check back to see some other awesome designs!

Can I first say that I love this lady! She had me laughing with every email. Her blog name is Crayon Wrangler so I was so excited to be able to find a lasso and crayons to go along with the name.

Backing Up Your Blog Because...

This is why you back up your blog. Because one day it could be there and the next thing that happens is your computer acts like it is taking a vacation and suddenly everything you had on your blog is gone.

So how do you back up your blog? Well on blogger it is so easy. Just follow these steps below -

- Go to the layout of the blog you are needing to back up.

- Go to Settings - Basic - Export Blog (Be very careful that you don't hit the delete one instead!)

- Then it will ask you this and you will need to click download blog

- Then save it to somewhere on your computer.

Now it only saves the post that you have already written so depending on how much you write you should do this once a week to once a month. However often you feel you need to.

And if something were to ever happen with your blog you can import this file and it will restore whatever you have saved! Or you can also transfer it if you ever decide to switch platforms.

Don't be a Carrie. Back up to be better safe then sorry : )

Once of my favorite designers is Leslie from The Golden Girls (who was so kind to let me use one of her kits to design this blog). So recently I sat down with her through email and asked her a couple questions to get to know her better.

How long have you been designing digital scrapbooking kits?
Almost 3 years...wow, I can't believe it's been that long!

How did you first get started?
A friend introduced me to digital scrapping, and it was all "down hill" from there!

What inspires your scrapbooking kit designs?
Mostly my kids, sometimes my hubby has a good idea, my sister gives me lots of good ideas too!

Do you have any favorite colors that you like using when designing?
I really like using tan. I'm a "BRIGHT" colors person, so using tan kinda helps tone things down a bit!

Out of all of your kits do you have a favorite?
Oh gee...let's see, I love Wiggle Worm, The Happy Place, ENJOY is probably my current "most" favorite!

Besides doing the digital design what are your other hobbies?
I love to sew, hybrid, crochet, decorate, pretty much anything crafty I LOVE!!

What made you name your shop The Golden Girls?
My sister and I originally started this little "venture" together. Our maiden name was Golden and growing up everyone always referred to us as "The Golden Girls". Even though she doesn't design with me anymore, I decided to still keep the name.

Are there any colors that you don't like working with?
PURPLE...for some reason it never works very well for me. I have a handful of kits with purple, but none of them are my favorites!

Hybrid, or Digital?? Digital...I just love photoshop!!! Hybrid, can't live without my Quickutz Sillhouette or my Crop A Dile!

If you're caught up, DO NOT GET BEHIND!!! If you're behind, just start from right now...don't try backtracking or you'll just get frustrated!!! Do it because you love it, and be true to yourself and your own unique style.

When I saw this Abbalicious Kit I knew that I wanted to use this background for this blog. And luckily she was willing to let me! Ever since then I have been so addicted to her kits and hope that you will go check her out!

The new feature Blogger has that lets you add pages to your blog? Like an About Me page, TOU page, or maybe just somewhere to post your awards!

I am so excited about this new feature and wanted to know if you guys knew about this yet? If not here are simple instructions how to use and get new pages on your blog.

- Click on the "Posting" tab and you will come up with this -

- Then you will have several options including: New Post, Edit Posts, Edit Pages, or Comment Moderation -

Pick Edit Pages and you will be taken to a screen that looks like this -

- Then click New Page (you can have up to ten) and you will see this -

Here you can type up your page. It will look like one post per page so you will have to go back and add stuff to that page or delete stuff when you're done with it (like if you get new awards).

Then save.

- Now you should see the title of your page like a nav bar under your header or on your sidebar.

You can pick were you want the links to be by going to your Page Elements and placing them wherever you like. Once you have added a page you will see a "Page" gadget in your elements. Just click that. There are other options here too like which pages to show, what order to show them in, and when the pages are to be published. Note: Some designs/layouts might not allow for the links to be placed under your header.
